About Katie

Hi, I'm Katie! Welcome to my blog, where I ramble about anything and everything. I'm 20 years old, a junior at Boston College and am pursuing a major in International Studies and a minor in French. I'm currently studying abroad at Sciences Po in Paris. I plan on keeping this experience well-documented by blogging every single day, even if my entries consist of only a few new words I learned, or a new picture I took. I love photography, traveling, reading, and cooking. I love all kinds of music; check out what I'm listening to at last.fm. Check out some more random facts about me, if you're so inclined...

My life, according to Tom Petty.

So, I kinda had this on Facebook, but I figure I’d put up a post about it.

Directions: Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Pass it on to at least 15 people and include me. You can’t use the band I used. Try not to repeat a song title. It’s a lot harder than you think! Repost as “my life according to (band name).”

    Pick Your Artist:
    Tom Petty

    Are you male or female:
    American Girl

    Describe Yourself:
    The Wild One, Forever

    Describe where you currently live:
    This Old Town

If you could go anywhere, where would you go:
    Into the Great Wide Open

    Your favorite form of transportation:
    Free Fallin’

    Your best friend is:
A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me)

    What is life to you:
    Learning To Fly

    Your fear:
    Only a Broken Heart

What is the best advice you have to give:
    It’ll All Work Out

    Your Love:
    A Face In The Crowd

    My Motto:
    I Won’t Back Down

    Sky blue sky…

The sky has as many different personalities as us human beings do.  I was walking back from class today, head tilted upward ever so slightly to drink it all in.  To my right, was the most pristine blue sky, broken only by a handful of the whitest, fluffiest clouds.  To my left was a darkening sky, quickly taking on a slate hue.  A couple hours later, I’m sitting here by my big bay window, still looking up at the sky, which has recovered from its ashen state and is a deep blue once more.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Death Cab for Cutie. You know how it is when a song just hits the exact center of your being?  When it sums up everything you are thinking, everything you are, at that exact moment?  That’s what Death Cab is doing for me right now.  Love.

Although these lyrics aren’t among the ones that I’m relating to, it’s still a beautiful, sad song.

    Brother on a Hotel Bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting because I’m not who I used to be.
No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise,
The youthful boy below who turned your way and saw,
Something he was not looking for; both a beginning and an end.
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize,
When he catches his reflection on accident.
On the back of a motor bike,
    With your arms outstretched trying to take flight;
    Leaving everything behind.
But even at our swiftest speed we couldn’t break from the concrete,
In the city where we still reside.
And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea like navy men,
‘Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides,
Like brothers on a hotel bed.
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting because I’m not who I used.

    Sunshine on my shoulders…

SUN!  Finally!  Too bad I spent the first 6 hours of this sunny day inside, training for my new front desk job at a local hotel.  So yes, I finally have a job, I will finally be making money, and I will finally stop bitching to you guys about being unemployed.  But rest assured, I will find other things to bitch about soon enough.  So, sun!  As soon as I got home, I sat outside, smiling gleefully as the sun beat down on my pasty, Irish/Norwegian skin.  It was the best.  Like, actually the best.

I’m reeeally looking forward to this weekend, which for me is going to start Thursday evening.  I’m going into the city to meet up with Adam, we’re going to his company outing.  Which, might I mention, is a 311/Ziggy Marley concert.  Which, of course, will be quite fun.  And then early Friday morning, Ashley and myself (and maybe/hopefully Aliya?!) are driving up to Boston.  And I just have to get this out of my system…WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!  Okay, so in case you couldn’t tell, REALLY excited.  I miss the good ole’ T and my favorite restaurants and just the city itself.

Anyways, dinner time!  My mom’s making burgers, so I’m crumbling mine up and putting it on a salad with yogurt ranch dressing (delicious, surprisingly somewhat healthy, and I highly recommend it).

    Pet Butler? Really?

As I was cruising back to my house from the gym this morning, I saw a ridiculous truck that said Pet Butler on it.  I was thinking, “Wow, cause my dog needs a butler…?”  So anyways, it got me curious, and I decided to do some research when I got home.  Turns out its a waste clean up service that charges $113.67 per month to have the crap removed from your yard twice a week.  I mean, I guess it could be useful if your dog takes industrial sized dumps that you don’t feel like cleaning up…but really, can’t you just grab a shovel and scoop that (literal) shit yourself?  We have services for EVERYTHING these days, it’s just kinda crazy.  I dunno, I’m starting to think we’re lazy…

Anyways, that’s that.  I gotta run and finish packing for this weekend.  I’m going up to Saratoga with my brother to see Dave Matthews Band.  The two shows I’m seeing this weekend will be my 14th and 15th.  Aaaand I’m pretty pumped, because as I mentioned in an entry a few days ago, their new CD is great.  And Emily may be going tonight, and I’m meeting up with Steve, Gayle, Aliya and Sofia tomorrow for the show and a camp-fest afterwards.  Should be fun!  Let’s hope it doesn’t rain.  Woooo, smell ya later!

    Shake me like a monkey.

Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux KingI did it.  I finally purchased the new Dave Matthews Band CD, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King!  I’ve been listening to it all day, and it’s amazing!  I’m in love with Funny The Way It Is,  Dive In, and You & Me.  I love the artwork, too; Dave drew everything and apparently had some kiddies color it in (which he discussed on an interview for the Today show).  The concert up in Saratoga is going to be awesome this weekend, and I’m trying to convince my brother to see the Friday night show with me, too.  So yeah, invest!  It’s good.  Anyways, I’m putting the lyrics to “Funny The Way It Is” at the end of the post; they’re definitely worth mulling over.

Moving on.  I’m super burnt because I’m an idiot and sat outside all afternoon without sunblock.  You would think that doing Relay For Life for 5 years would have cured me of that, but nope.  I’m still dumb.  The only good thing that will come out of this is not being milky white (as my brother described me, although he’s pretty Casper-y himself).  Teehee.

Anyways, nothing new to report, really.  Oh, I’m not gonna be working this week because my boss ran out of things for me to do.  Which means I’m actually unemployed at this point.  I’ll be tutoring for another couple weeks, but other than that, I have no idea how I’m going to make money.  My brother suggested I collect cans (fabulous?) or work as scorekeeper at the hockey rinks he plays at.  He thinks they’re looking for people, and apparently pay $20 per game.  Any other ideas?  Keep me posted, please.

Lying in the park on a beautiful day
Sunshine in the grass and the children play
Sirens pass in fire engine red
Someone’s house is burning down on a day like this

The evening comes and we’re hanging out
On the front step and a car goes by with the windows rolled down
And that War song is playing
    “Why can’t we be friends?”
Someone is screaming and crying in the apartment upstairs

    Funny the way it is
    If you think about it
Somebody’s going hungry and someone else is eating out
    Funny the way it is
    Not right or wrong
Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song

The way your mouth feels in your lover’s kiss
Like a pretty bird on the breeze or water to a fish
A bomb blast brings the building crashing to the floor
Hear the laughter while the children play war

    Funny the way it is
    If you think about it
One kid walks ten miles to school, another’s dropping out
    Funny the way it is
    Not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath, his baby’s being born

    Standing on a bridge
    Watch the water passing underneath
It must have been much harder when there was no bridge, just water
    Now the world is small
Remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars?

Watch the sky, a jet plane so far out of my reach
Is there someone up there looking down on me?
A boy sees a bird, so close but every time
He’ll never catch her but he can’t stop trying.

    NEW CAMERA!!!

GUYS, I finally did it! I bought a reeeal DSLR camera! I decided on the Canon Digital Rebel XSi, and I’m in love. I haven’t had a chance to put the photos up here on Spazzle, but you can check out the ones I’ve put up on Facebook by CLICKING HERE. Right now I only have the kit lens that came with it, but I’m gonna buy another lens after I do some more research and figure out what I want to use the lens for. Wooooeeey, I know you’re all excited for me :)

Random thought: I want to play tag. Seriously, hasn’t it been so long since you’ve played? Or even better, man hunt. Maybe I’ll organize a game this weekend…

Okay, so I’ve been sitting here in the Chocolate Bar writing my business law paper (on the right’s of photographers, actually, so it’s pretty interesting), and I’ve been listening to Pandora. And seriously, I have had SUCH a good line up of songs in the past half hour…Joshua Radin radio is the way to go. Check it:

Iron & Wine ? Fever Dream
    John Mayer ? Say
    Joshua Radin ? These Photographs
The Format ? On Your Porch
    Regina Spektor ? The Call
    The Shins ? New Slang
    Dispatch ? Out Loud
    William Fitzsimmons ? Goodnight
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds ? Crash Into Me (Live 1999)
Death Cab for Cutie ? What Sarah Said
Joshua Radin ? No Envy, No Fear

Uhmmk, more later…I really have to write this paper.
