About Katie

Hi, I'm Katie! Welcome to my blog, where I ramble about anything and everything. I'm 20 years old, a junior at Boston College and am pursuing a major in International Studies and a minor in French. I'm currently studying abroad at Sciences Po in Paris. I plan on keeping this experience well-documented by blogging every single day, even if my entries consist of only a few new words I learned, or a new picture I took. I love photography, traveling, reading, and cooking. I love all kinds of music; check out what I'm listening to at last.fm. Check out some more random facts about me, if you're so inclined...

    Bon anniversaire à Ashley!

HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY, ASHLEY!  My lovely and loyal roomie is finally of legal drinking age (thank God)!  I wish I were back in Boston to celebrate with her and everyone else; it’s actually kind of weird not being there.

Today was largely uneventful.  I had French today, and went out to lunch afterwards with a few girls from the class.  We went to this place called the CROUS, which is a student cafeteria where you can get quite a bit of food for not too much money.  I ended up getting some seafood paella with fish (bad call on the fish…I’m still nauseous thinking about it), and a little apple-y tarte for dessert.  It only cost 3.45 euro, which I guess in the grand scheme of things isn’t bad at all.

Other than that, I worked on my two papers and exposé all day.  Fun.  This whole school thing is interfering with my life over here…

    Bon anniversaire, Melanie!

It’s Melanie’s 21st birthday!  We’re going to her house to have some wine and cheese (not stereotypical at all), and then we’re meeting up with some of the boys at the Hideout in Bastille.  Should be fun!

    More tomorrow.

    Angela is Twenty-One.

My best friend turns 21 today.  She…is…old…?  I can’t believe how 12 years have flown by…it feels like just yesterday when we met in third grade.  She had just moved to NY from CT, and I told her I liked her cursive.  Which is laughable now…and clearly must have been a third-grader’s ploy to befriend someone…?  Anyways, 12 years and counting, she’s the best, if you know her, wish her a super Happy Birthday!

Side note: since my Facebook status is dedicated to wishing her a happy birthday all day, I figured I’d add all of the potential status updates here, since my life is just that intriguing.

6:27: Katie … loooves being woken up by a 6:30am fire alarm.

10:34: Katie … looks like a convict in new ID photos for Paris…but maybe Parisians dig that?

10:57: Katie … FOUND HER EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE.  143 Chocolate Bar Manager.

11:26: Katie … is diggin’ the new look of GROOVESHARK and hopes it’s here to stay.

12:25: Katie … just got really freaked out by the advertisement, “What do you smell like to Edward Cullen?”

Okay, I actually have to write a paper now.  It’s about prostitution…?

PS: it’s actually incredibly fun to update your status every five minutes…does it make me a hypocrite that I hate it when everyone else does it, but love doing it myself?  Hmm…

    I am morally bankrupt.

Yesterday, I left Challenge of Justice (one of my classes) feeling morally bankrupt, as per usual.  Put yourself in the following scenario:

You spent all summer saving up for a $700 pair of shoes (…go with it?).  You’re walking around a lake, and you see a child getting pushed around by two older, bigger men.  They push the child into the lake, and he is going to drown unless you step into the water to save him.  If you do so, you ruin your brand new shoes, but you save the child’s life.  So the question is: what do you do?

Every single person in the class responded with a resounding “screw the shoes, save the child.”

Every single person in the class also fell into the professor’s trap: if we are so willing to save the life of a child who is right in front of us, why do we ignore the call of those children who are halfway around the world, dying from curable diseases such as dysentery?  Why do we choose to spend our money on such expensive shoes, when we can donate $700 to an organization to save ten children?  Such a scenario raises many excellent questions about society and about human nature.

If you want to read more about it, check out The Right to Be Rich or Poor by Peter Singer.  I actually have yet to read it, but this was the basis for our discussion in class.

Also, did you know that one in four women will be sexually assaulted at least once on campus during their four years at college?  My friend Caitlin was in the Dust Bowl raising awareness about this issue, using the catchphrase “help end sexual assault on campus.”  Someone was actually ignorant and heartless enough to say, “I’d rather not” as he was walking by.  I can’t even fathom how someone could say that.

Also…HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NADIA!  You’re old.  Yikes.

Sidenote: Big Feet Pajama Co. just came up in the ads on my Facebook sidebar.  I have no idea why.  But hey, I’m not complaining.  Somebody buy me a onesie?

    Kev is old.

Today is a special day.  Today is Kev’s birthday.  AKA today is my dad’s birthday.  I’m sitting here in my office waiting to wish him a Happy Birthday, but he hasn’t shown up yet.  This could mean one of two things: either his networking meeting ran late, or turning 56 is not sitting well with him.  Either way: Happy Birthday, Dad, and thanks for giving me an excuse to eat ice cream cake!  PS, does anyone else eat ice cream cake for birthday dessert?  It’s a family tradition I guess, a good ole’ Baskin Robbins ice cream cake with extra crunchies (because after all, crunchies are the best part).

I finally got some of my photography up!  I still have to add personal pictures of friends and stuff, but I have the good stuff linked in the tab above, or in the sidebar to the right, so check ‘em out and let me know what you think!

Random thought: why is it so addicting watching other people parallel park?  Whenever I’m sitting next to a designated parallel parking space, I find myself watching intently as people try to maneuver their way into the spot (which is sometimes actually a lot smaller than their car/gigantic, gas guzzling SUV).  I know it’s a nervewracking (cruel?) thing to do because I myself hate having my parking skills observed and critiqued by strangers.  It’s hard enough when no one is watching, but when you have an audience…infinitely more difficult.  It’s just so amusing though: hit the curb, pull out of the spot, nudge forward millimeter by millimeter, reverse too quickly and slam on the breaks, repeat.  When they finally do get in the spot, I love how they often give a satisfied nod, or what they believe to be a discreet fist pump.  I  have a hard time restraining myself, and can barely stop myself from cheering or giving them a congratulatory high five.  So next time you’re parallel parking, rememeber: there are probably a couple of freaks like me watching you, and the fist pump is never discreet.

Just thought I should give y’all an update on the PB&J count: thus far in my life I have consumed 8.5 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  For those of you who are not aware of the situation, you should know that I ate my first PB&J at Relay For Life in February, 2009.  So yes, I’m keeping track, and yes, I will keep you updated when I eat my next sandwich of the gods.

    My Horizontal Life

    My Horizontal Life

My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands by Chelsea Handler.  Chelsea Handler’s memoir, if you will, of the various one-night stand experiences she has had thus far in her life.  Ranging from midgets to (almost) really old men, her stories are borderline insane, and most definitely hilarious.  If you’re looking for a good beach read, something light that will have you laughing your ass off, this is the book for you.  I haven’t laughed out loud at a book in a while, and so was pleasantly surprised to be doing so with this.  I checked out a couple of her videos on YouTube, which were also funny.  Her interviews with T.I. and Snoop Dogg were both pretty funny, too.

Also, I wanna comment on how depressing the poll results are.  First off, if you haven’t seen the poll yet, just look to the right *points*.  I posted the following “would you rather” question: would you rather be stupid or ugly?  Sadly, so far, people have overwhelmingly voted for stupid, and I’d like to know why.  So if you voted ’stupid,’ or think you can explain why somone would vote stupid, please enlighten me by leaving me a comment below.  It would be much appreciated.  And if you have any suggestions for the next “would you rather,” please leave them in the comments as well!

Anyways, I think it’s about time I got to work.  Stay fabulous.

    Must. Sleep.

I’m beyond exhausted.  I have been awake for 36 hours straight, save for a 45 minute nap prior to dinner.  I don’t really know how I’m functioning right now, or how I managed to tutor someone for the Earth Science regents for 2 hours a while.  Slavin’s and Gayle’s (very) surprise birthday party was yesterday…so much fun.  I’m really sad I missed the actual surprise; courtesy my mild dyslexia, I confused Route 17 off of exit 16 with exit 17.  We only drove 20 miles out of the way, no big (ugh).  Anyways, really fun, it was up at Mike’s lake house in White Lake.  We had really nice weather, great food, tasty beverages, and good company.

I changed the theme again.  Still not one that I made, but I customized it a bit to suit SpazzleNET.  I’m really going to make my own one of these days, I’ve just been really busy the past week.  And notice that the would you rather question is over on the sidebar now, although you can still feel free to write more about it in the comments section below the entry.

But yeah, I need sleep.  Pretty much right now.  I might actually fall asleep sitting her-
